ABOUT THE FOUNDERS
Amy and Ed met after changing careers and while teaching at the same Chicago Public School with a shared dream of making learning work better for kids. They live in the community with their son and two rescue dogs.
HOW IT BEGAN
It was the love of teaching that sparked it all.
We were two Chicago Public Schools teachers who felt this great potential to make learning relatable, relevant, and exciting. The work we were doing in the classroom was so inspiring, and yet we felt limited by testing, grades, and traditional curriculum.
For us, the magic was being squeezed out of the process.
THE LABORATORY IS BORN
We knew that in order to get kids excited about learning, we had to create an inviting, interactive space in which they could question, experiment, and challenge. We had to make science matter.
We invested everything to make this dream a reality. Keeping in line with our DIY philosophy, we painted our own whiteboard and chalkboard walls. We designed and built all of our furniture using reclaimed wood. We spent countless hours creating experiments and developing storylines to perfectly engage our students.
One of the biggest gaps we witnessed as longtime teachers in CPS is the huge disconnect between the subjects. Students are asked to read books and memorize scientific facts, but there is no place in schools to bring it all together. That’s where we come in. So many children love to read, but are intimidated by science. Likewise, many think science is cool but have never read a book for fun.
Our crowning achievement is creating programs that build on students’ current interests and bring their passions to life.
